CountertopLab publishes buying guides and practical articles about countertop and compact home appliances: ice makers, mini fridges, countertop dishwashers, portable washing machines, small kitchen gear. This page sets out how that content is produced, what the recommendations rest on, and how the site earns money.

What Our Recommendations Rest On

Our recommendations come from desk research. We do not have a testing facility, we do not receive sample units from brands, and we do not describe products as though we had used them ourselves. What we do compare:

• Manufacturer specifications and stated features across competing models in the same category
• Current pricing, and how it shifts between models at different tiers
• Verified customer reviews, read for repeated reliability complaints rather than the average score alone
• Published manuals and support documentation, where the question is how something actually works

Where an article describes how a product behaves over months of ownership, that comes from owner reports and documentation. Those are sources you can go and check, not private experience you would have to take on trust.

How Products Get Picked

Products are sourced from Amazon and filtered before any of them reach an article:

• Listings under 50 customer reviews are dropped whenever enough alternatives qualify. A handful of reviews says almost nothing about whether a product lasts.
• The top pick in each article is the highest-rated product among those with at least 100 reviews. Where nothing in a category clears that bar, the strongest available option is used instead.
• No article carries more than three products. Past that it stops being a recommendation and turns into a list.
• Candidates are checked against the article topic and dropped if they do not fit, so a guide on one product type does not fill up with loosely related listings.

What We Will Not Do

• Take payment from a manufacturer or brand for coverage, placement, or a better rating.
• Publish invented author identities. Articles carry a team byline, because a team is what produces them.
• Claim first-hand use of a product nobody here has handled.
• Quote experts we have not spoken to, or cite figures we cannot point to a source for.

Articles get revised as products are discontinued, prices move, and better options appear. If something here is wrong, whether a stale recommendation, a dead link, or a plain factual error, tell us. Fixes go into the article itself rather than a note at the bottom.
